Position Summary
The Tooling Engineer provides tooling engineering expertise in the areas of tooling process, R&D, design, machining, toolmaking, debugging, lean improvements, and leading projects. The Tooling Engineer must enhance the tooling capabilities at CDT by providing support and expertise on new product development projects, improving troubleshooting methods, developing scalable problem-solving standards, leading projects, and provides engineering support in all tooling processes.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering support throughout the tooling build process
- Provides engineering support during the troubleshooting process, process development, and qualification of production development tooling projects
- Plans and coordinates the build of Molds, Dies and fixtures, and works directly with internal and external build sources to get them built on time and to required quality
- Manage the approved supplier list for tooling (ASL)
- Review and lead tool design reviews with internal and external vendors
- Manage vendors, cost, and timelines to support execution of tool builds.
- Creates and document written records related to tooling and process improvements
- Conceptualizes and initiates the design and build process of fixturing for tooling and manufacturing to deliver efficiency gains
- Support and comply with the company Quality System, ISO, and medical device requirements
- Read, understand, and follow work instructions and standard work
- Ensure business systems are implemented, maintained, and functioning properly
- Technical project liaison on the build side – project engineer function, between multiple project functions
- Responsible for on time build completion, working with vendors and finding solutions to keep tooling build on track to customers’ schedule
- Responsible for executing required tool adjustments or modifications during development and tool grooming
- Works with design engineering and external vendors and obtains tooling quotes best tailored for the job and provides these quotes to estimating.
- Applies scientific method (tooling related) and works with key functions to come up with a better and reliable product (tool).
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in related field
- 5+ years of experience working with injection molding tooling
- Strong background with troubleshooting and root cause analysis
- Strong technical writing capabilities
- Knowledge at an advanced level of all aspects of precision tooling and tooling component manufacturing
- Experience working independently under pressure with multiple deadlines
- Ability to follow through on commitments and holds team members accountable
- Enhanced attention to detail with strong communication skills
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office programs (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and ERP and other business related systems
- Ability to use 3D CAD systems (SolidWorks required, Solid Edge preferred)
- Microsoft Office proficiency (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills

- Ability to prioritize and multitask
Desirable Criteria & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
- 10+ years of experience working with injection molding tooling
- Previous experience with stamping, tooling design, 3D CAD and CAM Software, development and validation of stamping tools and vertically integrated processes
- Ability to apply scientific method in troubleshooting of all types of tooling
- Broad understanding of product and tooling materials
- Lean manufacturing experience, including statistical analysis
- Manufacturing process and design validation
- Proficient in use of statistical software tools (e.g. MiniTab, QC Cale)
- Strong interpersonal, team and customer presentation skills
- Strong adherence to controlled systems and processes while maintaining creativity
- Demonstrated ability to effectively make decisions, set clear measurable / aggressive objectives for projects / programs, break complex problems into manageable tasks, and define due dates and meet deadlines
- Supervisory experience
- Continuing Education; including participation in local chapters, associations, and/or organizations
